A Familiar Tune

June 7th, 2007

Lately, songs have been running through my head particularly these lines from the Beatles:

There’s nothing you can do that can’t be done.
Nothing you can sing that can’t be sung.
Nothing you can say but you can learn how to play the game

It’s easy.

There’s nothing you can make that can’t be made.

No one you can save that can’t be saved.

Nothing you can do but you can learn how to be in time

It’s easy.

There’s nothing you can know that isn’t known.
Nothing you can see that isn’t shown.
Nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.

It’s easy.

And this song by Bruce Springsteen:
Performed by Aimee Mann & Michael Penn

Seen a man standin’ over a dead dog lyin’ by the highway in a ditch
He’s lookin’ down kinda puzzled pokin’ that dog with a stick

His car door flung open he’s standin’ out on Highway 31

Like if he stood there long enough that dog’d get up and run
It struck me kinda funny, seemed kinda funny sir to me
Still at the end of every hard day people find some reason to believe

Now Mary Lou loved Johnny with a love mean and true
She said “Baby I’ll work for you every day, bring my money home to you”

One day he up and left her and ever since that
She waits down at the end of that dirt road for young
Johnny to come back

Struck me kinda funny, funny yeah in deed

How at the end of every hard earned day you can find some reason to believe

Take a baby to the river, Kyle William they called him
Wash the baby in the water, take away little Kyle’s sin

In a whitewash shotgun shack an old man passes away

Take the body to the graveyard, over him they pray

Lord won’t you tell us, tell us what does it mean

At the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Congregation gathers down by the riverside
Preacher stands with his Bible, groom stands waitin’ for his bride

Congregation gone sun sets behind a weepin’ willow tree

Groom stands alone and watches the river rush on effortlessly

Wonderin’ where can his baby be

Still at the end of every hard earned day people find some reason to believe

Music has meant a lot to me throughout my life. It aptly describes and portrays feelings and lessons learned over time. These songs strike a chord with what I’ve been feeling and going through lately- The Beatles more literally, Bruce more through the moral of the song. The melodies and music add so much to the feeling of the words. I’m glad I could post them here.

It’s true that we can do anything that can be done. Everything happens for a reason- even the hard stuff. Nothing is coincidental. We can find truth and reason in everything we experience, and come what may, there’s always a reason to believe.

Yo Wonder Woman… all you need is love! Like the site. Very smart, if I do say so myself.

True. We all need to believe…and somehow we’re resilient enough to do so…

More than the music it always has been lyrics which has stumped me over the years

I see these two songs differing in optimism levels…almost two sides of the same coin. It’s easy in one, and it’s hard in the other.

I thought the Mann/Penn Boss cover terrific.

hdreader- your input has been insightful. Sometimes I can’t fully understand (right away) what my brain is trying to tell me.
